Hunter, time usage, new book, house, television
Hunter S Thompson committed suicide yesterday. Below is what I wrote for blogging.la.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Not strictly L.A.-related, apart perhaps from the astounding movies inspired by him, but Hunter S. Thompson has passed away, unfortunately by his own hand.
When bloggers get a little too full of themselves or of their medium, point them toward HST — the man was doing it decades before any current pretender fired up a web browser. I daresay if it weren’t for him and those he inspired, we wouldn’t be here spewing words into the ether:
“So much for Objective Journalism. Don’t bother to look for it here — not under any byline of mine; or anyone else I can think of. With the possible exception of things like box scores, race results, and stock market tabulations, there is no such thing as Objective Journalism. The phrase itself is a pompous contradiction in terms.”
Boy that was quite a night’s sleep — even after being woken up by the dog barking between 6 - 7, I managed to get back to sleep and woke up about an hour ago.
Lots to do today, or at least I have lots on my list. Just about to do some necessary re-arranging; I had originally planned on getting Squish over to the vet during their open hours this morning — looks like it’s gonna be this afternoon instead, and Denyse and the dog might be coming along. The other big things today are a grocery store run, which means some meal planning and list making. Gym tonight at 8p. Back to work tomorrow.
I’m feeling rather pissy about time right now, specifically my usage of it. Simultaneously feeling a need to get things done as well as carving out time to do nothing (or rather do something leisurely that doesn’t involve a screen). Still have to work that out, but if I got things done as well as I put things off, I’d be in pretty good shape. ;)
Some interesting ideas re the new book last night, nothing too specific yet but there are some granules that I might be able to coalesce content around.
The house is really nice right now. Everyone is asleep, even the dog. The only sounds apart from a quiet iTunes are the wall fountain in the living room, the coffeemaker going off in the kitchen, the floor furnace kicking in, and the occasional white-noise car on the rainy streets outside.
Well that didn’t last long…. ;)
I’m thinking maybe I’ll try getting the meal planning/recipe finding out of the way in a minute here so I can get to the groceries early. The evening is going to get impacted quickly if I’m not careful.
Time gets sucked away like crazy. God forbid you should take a couple of hours for piddling around. Bah.
I’ve been trying for a week or so now to make sure the dishes are done and coffee is made every night. It’s hard to accomplish sometimes, especially on nights with one of the CSIs on (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) or the gym. Then throw cooking into the mix, and yikes.
Carving out an hour to read seems impossible at times. It’s going to take more discipline. Using the computer only when necessary. Like my cutting out television to the minimum has helped out tremendously, it’s going to take some discipline on the computer front too. Just as well. Internet’s all overrated anyhow. ;)
