Bitstream Vera Sans Mono

There’s a TrueType font family called Bitstream Vera, available from the GNOME project. It has the uncommon combined benefits of being both highly legible and free.

The family has three groups — Sans, Serif, and Sans Mono. I’ve been trying out Sans Mono in the Terminal, and it’s great.

One caveat and a fix: with the default spacing in the Terminal, the _ underscore character isn’t visible. Bring up the Inspector window (command-I), go to Display in the popup, and then click on the Set Font button. You should see “Font Character Spacing” at the bottom of the revealed Font window — adjust the Height to be just slightly higher than the 1.0 value — you should see your underscores appear.
