Similarities in Blade Runner and Fifth Element

The first two occurred to me last year. I'm not reading anything into these any more than just cool coincidences, and it's of interest to me mostly because they are two of my absolute favorite movies.

  • Flying cars
  • Being served meals by old Asian men.
  • Ex-cop protagonists
  • Tall, athletic, beautiful, non-human women (replicant vs alien hybrid)
  • Pyramids
  • Giant adverts

More if I come across them.

UPDATES

2009-10-23: Thanks to the anonymous commenter who pointed out that actor Brion James is in both, as Leon the replicant and General Munro respectively. There's an Inland Empire connection as well, as he was born in Redlands and grew up in Beaumont.

I love this bit of trivia from IMDB:

Ridley Scott had decided to cast Frank McRae as Leon until he saw Brion James's audition. After the audition, Scott's secretary told him that James frightened her, and upon hearing that, Scott offered James the role.

Don't forget:

Brion James is in both.

And some links to Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius - i.e. in the fifth element there's an accusation of plagiarism from the two and Blade Runner is both linked to Moebius from his comic book "The Long Tomorrow" and then further from the creation of Dune which was a bit of a big bang in sci fi film creation.

Awesome!

How could I forget Brion James?! Thanks for that catch.

Music

Also the soundtracks are extremely similar. particularly the track "Love Theme" from Blade Runner and "Mina Hinoo" from the Fifth Element
