Using iChat Sounds in Adium. And RIP Jam Master Jay.

Using iChat Sounds in Adium

After my rant yesterday about switching back from iChat to Adium, I realized that I missed the former’s soundset, as compared to the cute (for the first couple of days) sounds of the latter. :) I tracked down iChat’s .aiff files to this directory:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/InstantMessage.framework/Versions/A/Resources/

There are six .aiff files there:

Buddy Logging In.aiff
Buddy Logging Out.aiff
Invitation.aiff
Logged In.aiff
Received Message.aiff
Sent Message.aiff

Copy those files to this directory:

~/Library/Application Support/Adium/Custom Files/Sounds/

then open up Adium’s preferences. Under the Other section, you’ll find Sounds. Assign the appropriate sounds with the pop-up menus (the six sounds will apply to the 8 menus well enough), et voila! Spiffy soundset in a spiffier IM client.

RIP Jam Master

I can’t even believe this. Fuck.

Dellpods?! MacGeek Smackdown?! Kings Doomed Already?!

Dude, You’re Getting an iPod!

In the What th—? competition of 2002, this will rank right up there at the top: Dell Sells Rival Apple’s iPods.

IM and Browser Smackdown

New article of mine up on MacSlash: IM and Browser Smackdown. Lesson One for software developers: do not piss off macgeek. :)

Kings: Good News, Bad News…

First, Ziggy Palffy goes down with a groin injury and onto the IR. Then he comes back. But wait, he misses a game or two. Okay, now he’s back.

Next, Jason Allison busts up his knee (or rather, has it busted up for him), maybe a season-ending injury. But wait, the MRI says he did tear one ligament, but ‘only’ sprained the other. Now he’s out ‘only’ 2-3 months.

Oh, and Adam Deadmarsh, the third member of the top line, now has a hand or wrist injury. He got an X-ray, but they weren’t sure if the cracks were old or new. He’s day-to-day.

And of course there’s Aaron Miller, one of our top blueliners, who had abdominal surgery back in September, out 6-8 weeks.

I have a bad feeling it’s going to be a long first half of the season.

Why Does Any One Use Linux?

There was an Ask MacSlash posted today, the subtitle of which “from the don-your-asbestos-suits-folks,-we’re-going-in dept.” seemed highly appropriate at first. :) Why Does Anyone Use Linux?

I was surprised to find it a pretty reasonable discussion, free of the usual flamewar explosions. Nigh on tepid, albeit informed, comments.

Of course, it wouldn’t be right without someone having posted:

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ, what a stupid question. Really. I can’t believe all the rest of you are seriously and patiently answering this without a breath as to how completely clueless the poster has to be….

Ah, the Internet. :)

My POV? Use what you want and don’t try to make me use yours by a) getting rid of your competitors or b) making it a religious issue. :)

Lakers vs. the Queens...er, Kings

At this rate, the sports game makers are gonna need to grab the fighting algorithms from the NHL games for their NBA titles. Vlade Divac said afterwards: “I thought it was going to be fun.” He was toppling to the ground at the time since a ref was nearby, so he may have been misquoted.

Of course, Shaq’s “I’m not worried about the Sacramento Queens” comment before the game might have ruffled a few feathers. ;) Should be a good season.

Will Lightning Keep On Striking?

There will be something very, very wrong with the universe if the Lightning continue much longer being the only unbeaten team in the NHL. Although, think where the Buccaneers used to be back in the day and where they are now.
