NYM @ LA, Game 3 NLDS

No getting around it, that was hard to take. A roller-coaster game to end a roller-coaster season, appropriately enough.

At the end of the night, the depressing sting of defeat was mitigated by at least two things:

  1. The Yankees lost. Badly.
  2. Our kids stepped up yet again.

Loney with his 3-4, 3 RBI game. Martin, 3-5 at the plate and a great performance behind the plate. Billingsley shutting things down for his inning. Broxton, despite being victimized by some bad luck, will be fine. Ethier pinch-hitting, also unlucky, but wait till next year.

It finally hit me at some point near the end that this might be the last Dodger game of the year. And when Ramon Martinez’s foul ball — after an awesome at-bat — settled into Shawn Green’s glove, the season ended for real. I’m sad, sure, but still hopeful for next season. We’ve only begun a process of construction and reclamation that promises some glorious years ahead.

By the way, I know Tom is beside himself with joy with the Athletics advancing, so congrats to them and him.

Update

Good summary and interesting speculation in this Ken Gurnick article on MLB.com today, “LA turns page on successful season”
