Soriano to Cubs for 8 years, deed to Sears Tower

Wow. Eight years, $136 million dollars. Not so much the dollar amount, but that number of years is pretty amazing. If that’s what it would have taken, I’m not too sad we didn’t get him — although according to this story in the Times:

The Dodgers were one of three finalists for Soriano, according to a source close to the negotiations, but declined to match a Cubs offer that eclipsed outfielder Carlos Beltran’s seven-year, $119-million deal with the New York Mets two years ago.

Will all the Cubbie moves this off-season (and they still might not be done) put them over the top? Hard to say, but that’s already a hell of a lineup they’ve got going with Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, and now Alfonso Soriano.

How do you suppose the Nationals’ management are feeling about not trading Soriano at the deadline last season?

(Sears Tower trivia: The building cost $150 million to build, in early 1970s dollars. :)

By the way, that Times story reports that Nomar was signed for 2 years, $18 million.
