Star Wars Day II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

movie poster

Impressions from the second movie. Just in case you've managed to not see the movies, here be spoilers:

  • The genesis of the vaunted Imperial fleet and army, the future oppressors of the galaxy. Yet demanded in the beginning by the Republic. Wasn't Hitler elected?
  • That gigantic battle between the Clones and Droids at the end was just amazing, with a true sense of massive scale. Love those proto walkers too.
  • Yoda's battle with Dooku is tremendous, showing yet again that the Good Guys' greatest weakness is caring what happens to their friends. But that friendship and caring is what will ultimately help defeat more powerful Bad Guys. Plus seeing Yoda limp in with his cane, then cast it aside for the sword fight.
  • I love checking out the different fighting styles of the Jedi, from Yoda's jumping spins, to Dooku's stately power, to Obi-Wan's straight-forward style, and of course Anakin's impulsive potential, the strongest of all. Showing character through fighting, like in the first film with Qui-Gon's strength contrasted with Darth Maul's evil acrobatics.
  • As much as I like Padme, you have to wonder at her reaction to Anakin's having wiped out the Sand People. Much has been made by critics of her seeming disregard for what amounts to genocide. Go read David Brin's Star Wars critiques for more on this line of thought.
  • Jango Fett and Boba. How cool is a bounty hunter who can take on a Jedi Knight?
  • Wonderfully dark film, the middle of this trilogy, like the darkness of the upcoming Episode V.

Brin's criticism

"Star Wars despots vs. Star Trek populists"

Why is George Lucas peddling an elitist, anti-democratic agenda under the guise of escapist fun?
