The Holy Trinity

It’s interesting to note that of the vaunted “Holy Trinity” of shortstops that came up in the late 90s, only one of them is still playing shortstop. So, in some alternate universe (say, MLB 2k6 or MLB 06: The Show with budgets turned off ;), you could have this infield:

  • 1st base: Nomar Garciaparra
  • 2nd base: ?
  • Shortstop: Derek Jeter
  • 3rd base: Alex Rodriguez

I say “alternate universe,” when in fact there were reports Nomar was going to wind up on the Yankees this past off-season. Thank goodness he didn’t! I can’t remember for sure, but I think they were talking about him playing in the outfield in NY.

The missing link

But who would be the 2nd baseman? If you didn’t care about the defense, Alfonso Soriano would have been an available candidate. Or the Nats’ actual 2nd baseman, Jose Vidro, for that matter. Not to mention Luis Castillo on the Twins. Continuing the shortstop theme, there’s Rafael Furcal who would fit in well. All of these guys are also of a similar generation as the Trinity.

Sticking with the Yankee Dream (aka Nightmare) Infield, I suppose you’d leave Robinson Cano at 2nd, though he’s younger, or Miguel Cairo, who is the same vintage as the other guys. Or do you slide Nomar over to 2nd and leave Jason Giambi at 1st?
