Hillenbrand cut by Blue Jays, Castilla cut by Padres
In a double-header of cuts today, Shea Hillenbrand was cut by the Blue Jays — apparently after a big honkin’ bunch of team vs player vs team melodrama — and Vinny Castilla was cut by the Padres, due to lack of production.
Stats so far this year (AVG, OBP, SLG):
- Hillenbrand .301/.342/.480
- Castilla .232/.260/.319
I’m curious to see who is going to take a shot at picking up these guys — I can’t imagine both of them wouldn’t be able to find opportunities elsewhere, despite their respective issues.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Hillenbrand’s 12 homers and 39 RBIs at third base for the Dodgers. I wonder what it would take to grab him. And I wonder what the real “issues” are with him and the team.
The Blue Jays have 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors.
With the trade deadline approaching July 31, Hillenbrand figures to draw interest from at least a couple of contending teams looking for offense….
