R-Name

There are quite a number of Mac batch file-renaming utilities out there. One of the best I’ve used is R-Name, available from YOT. You can do all kinds of fun stuff to filenames: find and replace with regular expressions; add, remove, and change extensions; add or remove from the start or end of filenames and ignore the file extension in the process; and number things sequentially (like 1001.html, 1002.html, 1003.html, etc.). It all works by drag-and-drop.

One bit that isn’t immediately apparently if you just start playing with it is that you need to press the “Show New Names” button before the “Rename” button becomes active — basically functioning as a Preview feature, which is nice.
