I realized a few days ago that given everything going on right now, I wasn’t going to make it to 50,000 words this year. That decided, I set a secondary goal of 30,000 words, which I passed this evening. With that, I am officially closing my participation in NaNoWriMo 2010.

It’s bittersweet — a relief being done, but a disappointment not to complete the challenge. Still, considering life at the moment, I’m pleased I got as far as I did.

And as I pointed out to myself while trying to decide on whether to participate this year, worst case I will have some number of words and planning done on a new novel, which is what happened. In retrospect, that last-minute decision to join and lack of pre-planning on the novel are what really did me in — if circumstances had been otherwise perfect, I might have been able to do it — alas, it was not to be.

Now I can return to the short story I put on hold to work on this project. Not to mention reading. :)

NaNoWriMo 2010: Days 10-15

Poor Man’s Tortilla Soup

  • “Family Size” can of Campbell’s Tomato Soup (condensed)
  • Fritos corn chips
  • Shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese

Add soup+water as instructed on can to pan on stove over medium-high heat. Add favorite spices to taste — usually an 1/ 8th to a 1/4th of a teaspoon of garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasonings, lemon pepper, and a dash or three of red pepper flakes does the job for us. Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.

In soup bowls, put a small handful of Fritos in each, then 2-3 ladles of soup. Add a serving of cheese to each bowl as desired (it’ll melt right up nicely), then sprinkle a few chips on top.

Serves 3-4 medium bowls. Careful, it’s hot!
