The Google Earth Blog is reporting that there’s been a significant hi-res photo update of the Google Maps database for large swaths of California and Texas, which will mean a subsequent update of Google Earth in a few days’ time. For comparison, I zoomed in on my house in both products to see what we can look forward to.

The power of ESPN

Not only does ESPN control the time of some games and make teams like the Angels travel home over night as has happened multiple times this year, it now controls where people sit in the dugout.

If I were Mike Scoiscia, I’d first hang a towel in front of the camera, then send the trainer upstairs to have a word with the ESPN rep. And by “have a word,” I mean bring a bat.

And if ESPN weren’t already On Notice, they would be now.

Vim Tip #1323: Faster keyboard layout - reverse the number row keys

In many languages you will use ‘!@#$%^&*()_’ far more often than you use ‘1234567890-’ so you will find yourself pressing SHIFT quite often, but this is not necessary. You can reverse the function of the number row keys so that typing a number key gives you the symbol instead of the number, and SHIFT-Number-Key can be used to type the number. This will save you alot of time leaning on the SHIFT key, especially for ‘(’ and ‘)’ and ‘_’, which are more common than their non-SHIFT characters ‘9’ and ‘0’ and ‘-‘.

WARNING: this is very frustrating for the first month or two when you will frequently press SHIFT when you don’t need to, or forget to press SHIFT when you do. After a few months your typing speed should be noticeably faster and more relaxed as you are no longer holding the SHIFT key down all day.
