"A Trip to the Moon" and "Tonight, Tonight"

Thanks to Brass Goggles for a trip down memory lane this morning.

First was this post linking to the Smashing Pumpkins’ video for “Tonight, Tonight” — one of the songs off their beautiful 1993 Siamese Dream album. Here it is via YouTube:

As the poster points out, this video is a clever homage to Le Voyage dans la lune, the French film from 1902 often credited as the very first SF movie.

(Brass Goggles had a post pointing to an English version a couple of months ago.)

Dodger notes: Gonzalez, Ramirez, Lieberthal, Lugo, Schmidt

An article in the Arizona RepublicBatista offered arbitration — has this informative bit near the end:

“By not offering [Luis] Gonzalez arbitration, it could make it a little easier for him to sign with another team. Because Gonzalez is a Type A free agent, his next team would have had to forfeit its own first-round pick to the Diamondbacks if Gonzalez had been offered arbitration.

“Gonzalez on Friday received his first contract offers, which came from Baltimore and the Los Angeles Dodgers, his agent Terry Bross said. Bross also anticipates offers from two or three more clubs.”

Grain of salt, of course, but it’s hard to figure out where the “other” LuGo (AKA Gonzo) would fit in now, absent some bodies moving east in a hypothetical trade for Manny Ramirez.

Speaking of Manny, there was a revealing bit of talk in a Dominican Today article — Dodgers want the Dominican Manny — quoting Grady Little:

“I know how to handle Manny Ramírez. I respect him as a player and he was a marvellous [sic] ballplayer in Boston. There aren’t many like him and the Dodgers need a player of his stature,” said the Dodgers manager.

“Manny would be a great Christmas present. Who wouldn’t want a gift like that?” added Little, who was attending trials for young players at Santo Domingo’s Olympic Stadium along with the general manager Ned Colleti [sic] and other executives from the Dodgers.

Indeed.

(Via Google News. Jon Weisman also quoted it in this post regarding the Greg Maddux arbitration situation.)

The Phillies, as expected, did not offer arbitration to Mike Lieberthal, so we can expect to see more news soon about him signing with the Dodgers, barring a problem in his physical.

And the Dodgers did offer Julio Lugo arbitration, though he probably will not accept, as he can get a better deal elsewhere, thus bringing the Dodgers compensation in the form of draft picks. On the flipside, the Giants offered Jason Schmidt arbitration, thus requiring compensation if he is signed somewhere else — like LA.

Dodger roster updates

There are some adjustments to make to the Dodgers roster. We’ve added Randy Wolf, a local-boy lefty, along with Juan Pierre. So now a couple of pitchers (with perhaps one more extra if Saito does not return) to be added and a spring training camp to shake out who stays with the big league team.

All kinds of rumors are flying around, including the periodic Manny Ramirez Trade rumors — this time most of the NL West teams (including the Dodgers [1]) have been encompassed in the Boston/ESPN-fueled frenzy. Meh. I guess they don’t have much better to do during the crappy weather up there. ;)

Mike Lieberthal, a free agent catcher last with the Phillies, and thus a teammate of Randy Wolf, is reportedly also interested in joining the Dodgers and for similar reasons. This would open the door to trading or DFAing Toby Hall, a likely event anyhow.

Oh, and the names are finally back on the frickin’ uniforms.

[1] I love a line in the SI.com Jon Heyman article:

No team should be considered a favorite to land Manny Ramirez since Ramirez has veto rights over trades and is a human knuckleball, flighty and unpredictable.

Birds out of place -- Arctic gulls and Mexican parrots

Arctic birds showing up in the California desert? Well, yes.

LA Times: Birders atwitter over sighting at Salton Sea

Scott Terrill got the news about 4 p.m. His son, who was attending a birding conference in the Central Valley, had heard about the sighting and called to tell his father. Minutes later, a co-worker came in to report news of an Internet posting of the bird. And just after that, a birding friend in Southern California gave him a call. The frenzy had begun.

Like many birders, Terrill, an ornithologist with a San Francisco Bay Area environmental consulting firm, keeps lists of the birds he’s seen. Lists are kept by state, by region, by time of year. A Ross’s gull was a great sighting for any list. For a California list, it was a crown jewel. The bird had never before been seen in the state.

Meanwhile, feral parrots squawk proudly in the Inland Empire.

Press-Enterprise: Wild parrots ruffle feathers in Redlands

There are a variety of theories on how they got here, but lots of people in Redlands and surrounding communities have been seeing — and more often hearing — feral parrots for more than 20 years.

Gene Cardiff, of Rialto, a past president of the San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society, says he seriously doubts that the parrots migrated to Redlands. That would amount to at least a 1,500-mile flight for the two most common Redlands species: the red-crowned (Amazona viridigenalis) and lilac-crowned (Amazona finchi), which normally call Central America and central Mexico home.
